Mission Moment with Grace Safrin The gift and blessing of being asked to serve the Lord In case you missed it Sunday:
CLC has Spirit (Store Apparel)! With our new logos, we’ve had fun putting together a spirit store for CLC and LLP clothing: http://clcvalpo.org/spiritwear. All orders are due October 7th, and should come in about 3 weeks after the store closes. To avoid delivery fees,
orders will be dropped off in our church mailboxes when they arrive. There is a little something for everyone! Take a look and see how the “spirit” moves you!
Parent Coffee Clatch
Update We currently have different members who have volunteered to lead
several of our weekly discussions, but there is room for more leaders. If you are interested in leading a week's discussion or would like to pose a topic for conversation, please click on this link to sign up: parent coffee clatch schedule (https://tinyurl.com/CLCcoffeeclatch) We'd love to see you when you can make it!
Blessing
of the Animals - Feast of St. Francis All through September,
we’re marking the Season of Creation in worship, and it will wrap up on the Feast of St Francis with a Blessing of the Animals! Bring your pets to the back turnaround on October 2 at 12:30 for a brief service of blessing for these creatures, who are such a blessing to us!
Do you ever feel like you need to “get away”? After a hiatus because of the pandemic, it’s feeling like time to offer another all-church retreat. This would offer time for reflection, fellowship, study, worship, and rejuvenation. Does that sound like something you would be interested in? Maybe you can help! We’re looking for
several people who would like to be part of the planning committee. If that’s you, please contact Pastor Erica at pastorerica@clcvalpo.org or Kathy Stefans at Kathy.stefans@gmail.com
Care for Personal
Care? Dave Keammerer puts together LWR Personal Care Kits (see newsletter
for contents). In order to assemble these kits, he needs supplies. I have been approved for a Thrivent Action Grant that will provide Dave $250 for this endeavor, but I would like him to have more! Would you like to help? Over the next two weeks, I will match dollar for dollar your donation to this cause up to a maximum of $250. This means we could provide up to $750 for the LWR Personal Care Kits—Thrivent Action Grant of $250, your
total donations of $250, my match up to a maximum of $250. Can you help with a small donation? You can give your donation to me, Dave, or put it in the CLC collection plate on Sunday! Karl Reichardt (karl.reichardt@valpo.edu, 219-252-9519)
School Supplies are collected for LWR We are in the middle of our drive to collect school supplies for Lutheran World Relief, and are in need of notebooks, rulers, scissors, crayons and pens. Our goal is to complete at least 100 school kits this year. As you purchase school supplies for your children, think about choosing supplies for others. School Kits for Lutheran World Relief are an important lifeline for learners all around the world. There is a basket in the Gathering Space for donations, or you can purchase from an Amazon wish
list and choose to have the items delivered directly to the church. There are a variety of suggestions on the list, with some items in bulk. The items listed are only suggestions; you may be able to find cheaper items as the inventory changes. We will be collecting items through mid-October. The link to the Amazon wish list can be found by searching Amazon lists for "CLC School Kit," or by clicking the link below. Amazon CLC School Kit wish list Here are the specifications for the items that we need: · 70-sheet notebooks of wide- or college-ruled paper, approximately 8” x 10 ½” (not loose-leaf paper) – each school kit gets four · A 30-centimeter ruler, or one with 30 centimeters on one side and 12 inches on the other · Blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades work well) · Black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink) – each school kit
gets five · A box of 16
or 24 crayons Gathering supplies with your children as they begin a new school year is a great way to remind yourself and them that we need to continue to love our neighbors, near and far. It helps us all remember that God’s love is everywhere! Thank you for your support!
Sunday School, Bible Studies and Adult Faith Formation News Younger Women's Small Group Gathering on Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm in room 209 - come for community and conversation, part book group, part Bible study! Sunday School has started! We are excited about a great year engaging the Bible stories that help us learn central faith practices. Follow this link to register: https://clcvalpo.churchcenter.com/registrations/events/1380476 Communion Conversations At CLC we welcome children to receive Holy Communion
at any age, when their families discern that they are ready. And then each year we offer "Communion Conversations," a chance for families to talk and learn together about the sacrament. We'll be gathering a group for conversation this Fall - if your child is receiving Holy Communion and hasn't yet had the chance to take part, or if your young folks are ready to start - please email Pr Erica so that we can find a good time for all! (pastorerica@clcvalpo.org) Adult Faith Formation During the 9:20 hour, be on the lookout for a variety of options this fall: * Parents Coffee and Conversation - Beginning Sept 11, a 'come when you can' group that gathers for conversation,
encouragement, Bible study, conversation about parenting. * Getting to Know CLC - We'll gather Sept 4, 11, and 18 to learn more about Christ Lutheran's community, beliefs, and ministries. * Sunday Morning Bible Study - Gather in September for the study "God's Exceptional Choice" * Ministry Fair - Sept 25 during Formation Hour, our Ministry Fair will take place in the Gathering Area. Stop by a variety of tables to learn about all the ways God is at
work through CLC, and find opportunities for you to connect! * Scripture and Sexuality - upcoming in October, we'll welcome Rev. Dr. Fred Niedner as we look at the many different ways scripture approaches relationships, family, and welcome. Help with Sunday School and Faith Formation! Sunday School adult leaders use our great curriculum and work in teams of four - your presence would be needed approximately twice a month, and your active leadership just one of those weeks. It's such a gift to share God's love with young folks, and to see the Holy Spirit active in their lives - email pastorerica@clcvalpo.org if this might be you! Sunday School youth helpers are a key part of our children's growth in faith, as they have older kids to look up to and learn from. Email pastorerica@clcvalpo.org if you can help out! Adult Faith Formation - do you have ideas for topics you'd like to engage during our 9:20 hour? Or could you lead a video series, or facilitate a
conversation or Bible Study? Email pastorerica@clcvalpo.org

CLC Social Ministry and Mission September 2022 Compass International Family Center, Valparaiso http://compassIFC.org equips international neighbors of all ages in Northwest Indiana with the educational services and support needed to thrive in their new community. Compass is “Open Arms * Hand in Hand” equipping new neighbors with language and life skills needed to thrive in the US
strengthening our community by breaking down divisions and isolation. With approximately 90 children and 40 adults joining 50 annual volunteers each week (including Ellen Swayne from CLC), each Compass night is an opportunity for growth and new friendships. Compass offers the following free services for all ages: Adult English classes, Citizenship classes,
K-12 tutoring, English learner preschool, Childcare, and soccer skills/drills, arts and crafts, and other fun enrichment projects. Compass is a Northwest Indiana organization of neighbors helping neighbors, linking arms for
the betterment of both individuals and community. 66th Synod Endowment Fund - “Lutherans for Black Lives” https://www.facebook.com/66thSynod has the vision “. . . that they may have life and have it abundantly!” (John 10:10b).
66th Synod’s mission is to “to establish justice and equity” and build a fund that allows those from the dominant culture to contribute so that some of the damage done due to inequitable treatment of Black Leaders in society and the ELCA (because of systemic racism, white supremacy, and complacency) may be repaired. A goal is to provide reparations to Black Leaders and Congregations of the ELCA especially as they study and
retire. Examples are: excessive student loan burdens, Pastoral calls to communities that are unable to pay a living wage, not being paid
comparable to white leaders, and low pension contributions (necessary to work well past 65 years of age). The Fund is hosted by Immanuel Lutheran Church (ELCA), Seattle, http://immanuelseattle.org. CLC’s connection is Rev. Angela Shannon, Pastor of All Saints Lutheran Church, Bowie, MD, and who serves on the Board of this nonprofit, has degrees from V.U. and LSTC (Chicago), grew up and was
ordained in Gary (Lutheran Parish), and has served congregations in the ELCA I-K Synod. Help achieve our goal of $2500 in September (over and above giving combined with CLC’s $1200 budgeted amount). By achieving our goal CLC will help Compass and 66th Synod Fund continue mutual support and service activities that are crucial to effective ministry. Use your weekly worship giving mailed in check to CLC and indicate “Compass/66thSynod” or contribute through PushPay on the CLC website https://clcvalpo.org via the “Give” button and choose Monthly Social Ministry Emphasis. Thank you to members for supporting monthly social ministry emphases.
