News for the week of August 7, 2022
Worship at the Beach Thank You! We had a wonderful spirit-filled time at Worship at the Beach and Picnic. We remembered our Baptism as we were all sprinkled during our joyful worship service with our friends
from Bethel Lutheran Church. What a joy it was to be together – even as we got drenched in a downpour! Many, many thanks to the planning committee: Patrice and Pat Weil, Irene Adams, Faith Noe, Rick and Karen Hug, Jacquie and Libby Chevalier, Tim Sutherland, Kathy Lundstrom, Don McMillan, and Phyllis Schroeder. Thanks,
too, to those of you who volunteered to help on the day of the picnic and those of you who brought food and games. Your generosity and help were appreciated by all. Thanks be to God!
Save the Date for a Special Meeting By the authority vested in the president of the
congregation in section C10.02 of the constitution, I am calling a special meeting of the congregation for the purpose of voting to formally consider this amendment to the constitution of the church that would add the Little Lamb Board Chairperson to the voting membership of the Congregation Council. . The special meeting will be held on August 21, 2022 during the faith formation hour. Please mark this date on your calendar and plan to attend.

Stephen Ministry Training
Stephen Ministry has been part of Christ Lutheran for many years. Our purpose is to walk with others who find themselves hurting or facing a difficult situation. Since God is the care giver we provide confidential support, insight, and encouragement. Training new Stephen Ministers occurs every year or two. Without new Ministers, our work with hurting people is not sustainable. The
need is always great and some of our Ministers have more than one care receiver. We believe the Lord has great plan for our ministry. Typically, Stephen Ministry self-limits itself to members and friends of our congregation. That is changing. As a Ministry, we are now intentionally reaching out beyond our walls. The
Lord is blessing this change with new hurting people. My question for you today is very simple; is the Lord “nudging” you toward this caring ministry? All Stephen Ministers participate in 50 hours of training and then we meet twice a month for group supervision. Who might we welcome into partnership
with our twelve active Ministers? You would be first on our list! Stephen Ministers are men and women who want to serve a need. We want to be instruments of the Lord working with hurting people. We have no requirements of previous experience. We would love the
opportunity to talk with you. We will have a Training Course that begins on September 12. Also, we would love to speak with you about your sense of being open to Stephen Ministry. Simply get a message to Pastor Erica or Pastor Tim or one of our Ministers who wear those blue badges in
church. Our Stephen Minister Coordinator or one of the Stephen Leaders would make an arrangement to meet with you for further conversation. Continued Blessings, Dr. Knauff Stephen Ministry Lead

School
Supplies are collected for LWR It's that time of year again - time to go back to school and to collect school supplies for Lutheran World Relief. School Kits for Lutheran World Relief are an important lifeline for learners all around the world. As you purchase school supplies for your children, think about choosing supplies for others. There is a basket in the Gathering Space for donations, or you can purchase from an Amazon wish list and choose to have the items delivered directly to the church. There are a
variety of suggestions on the list, with some items in bulk. The items listed are only suggestions; you may be able to find cheaper items as the inventory changes. We will be collecting items through mid-October. The link to the Amazon wish list can be found by searching Amazon lists for "CLC School Kit," or by clicking the link below. Amazon CLC School Kit wish list While there are a few more items that will got into each school kit, because of an overwhelming response last year, we will not need
to collect pencils, pencil sharpeners or erasers. This year we need the following to complete the kits: - FOUR 70-sheet notebooks of wide- or college-ruled paper, approximately 8” x 10 ½” (LWR cannot use loose-leaf paper)
- ONE 30-centimeter ruler, or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other
- ONE pair of blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded
steel blades work well)
- FIVE black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink)
- ONE box of 16 or 24 crayons
Gathering supplies with your children as you prepare for returning to school is a great way to remind yourself and them that we need to continue to love our neighbors, near and far. It helps us all remember that God’s love is everywhere! Thank you for your
support! SPECIAL NEED: School Supplies for a family Our partners at Bethel Lutheran have invited our
partnership in supporting school supply shopping for a family with especial need this year. With time being short, we've gone ahead and gotten those supplies to them, and would welcome any donations to help share the cost! Identify any gifts with a note on an envelope or memo line: Bethel school needs.

CLC Social Ministry and Mission August 2022 Speak up for people who cannot speak for themselves. Protect the rights of all who are helpless. (Proverbs 31:8) Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) https://www.lirs.org has a vision that all migrants and refugees are protected, embraced and empowered in a world of just and welcoming communities. LIRS mission is witness to God’s love for all people, standing with and advocating for migrants and refugees, transforming communities through ministries of service and
justice. For 80 years, LIRS has been a champion for migrants and refugees from around the globe. A legacy of courageous and compassionate service has made a difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of people who have sought safety and hope in America’s communities. LIRS history reflects American Lutherans’ deep immigrant roots and
passionate commitment to welcoming newcomers, especially those who are most in need. In partnership with community-based legal and social service providers nationwide, LIRS has helped over 500,000 migrants and refugees rebuild their lives in America. Lutheran Braille Workers (LBW) https://www.lbwinc.org has existed since 1943 to show the love of God to people with visual disabilities and to bring them into a growing relationship with God. LBW does this by engaging some 5,000 volunteers in over 150 Work Centers throughout the United States. Volunteers joyfully produce
approximately 250,000 volumes a year of Braille and specialized Large Print Bibles and Christian literature. CLC is one of these Work Centers and is involved in making Braille books of the Bible for the blind. COVID-19 has limited what volunteers can do so far in 2020 but as soon as is possible (later this fall) volunteers’ work will resume every Tuesday in CLC’s Fellowship Hall. Monthly emphases gifts will go towards national LBW activities and to help with supplies for CLC’s Work Center. Help achieve our goal of $2500 in August (over and above giving combined with CLC’s budgeted amount). By achieving our goal CLC will help LIRS and LBW continue mutual support and service activities that are crucial to effective ministry. Use your weekly
worship giving mailed in check to CLC and indicate “LIRS/LBM” or contribute through PushPay on the CLC website https://clcvalpo.org via the “Give” button and choose Monthly
Social Ministry Emphasis. Thank you to members for supporting monthly social ministry emphases.
Getting to Know CLC Join us to learn more about Christ Lutheran's ministry, history, and teaching. We'll gather for a 3-week series during the Formation Hour on Sundays (9:20am-10:20) September 4, 11, and 18, followed by an opportunity to formally stand with the congregation, confess our faith together, and declare that "Yes! God has something for me here." Register for our group here.
Volunteers to register & serve refreshments to donors are needed. Contact the church office for more information. Newcomers are
welcome; there are veteran volunteers who can show what to do. Only 3% of eligible Americans donate blood. Yet, every 2 seconds, someone needs it. Schedule your appt at
our Red Cross blood drive. All who come to give will receive a $10 gift card by email. Sign up: rcblood.org/donate
