Men's shelter assistance needed "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few...." Our church has served as an overnight shelter for homeless men in Porter County for over ten years. This program is in danger and we need your help. We are briefly pausing this program so that we can plan and regroup. One of the things we need greatly is more volunteers to serve as overnight supervision, starting July 15,
2023. Each shift is 4.5 hours. You are there to make sure the men are comfortable and safe. Most of the time it is very quiet. Bring a book to read, movie to watch, work to do, etc. We will train you on what you need to know and pair you up with someone that has done it before. If you have done it before but not recently, we need you too. Sign up for sessions is below. If you have questions reach
out to Diana Iltzsche, Benjamin Crill, Lisa Owen, or Tony Reinhold. Thank you for your support of this amazing ministry! Shelter Overnight Shifts
CLC Social Ministry and Mission June 2023 As you do it for the least of these, you do it for Christ. (Matthew 25:40) Each month the Social Ministry highlights a special giving opportunity. June’s emphasis is providing support for the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana http://www.foodbanknwi.org and Project Neighbors https://projectneighbors.org or https://www.facebook.com/ProjectNeighbors. The Food Bank of Northwest Indiana’s (FBNI) mission is “to provide food for hungry
people in NW Indiana through a network of charities increasing public awareness and advocating solutions for the issues involved with hunger and acting as an info &referral source to the community”. FBNI is based in Merrillville and is affiliated with and meets the guidelines of Feeding America www.feedingamerica.org and distributes over 2 million pounds of goods/year through 90 network charities in NW
Indiana. Project Neighbors (454 College Ave.) is a Not-for-Profit organization in Valpo. By addressing issues of race, class and poverty, Project Neighbors’ goal is to build healthy families and neighborhoods, where diversity of all kinds is welcomed and cherished. Project Neighbors’ accomplishments in Valparaiso include affordable housing at Caroline's Place and Neighbor's Place and Respite House, childcare and preschool at
Hilltop House, community health centers in HealthLinc, and the region's only low-power, all-volunteer community radio station, WVLP, among other “risks-turned-rewards.” Help achieve our goal of $2500 in June (over and above giving combined with CLC’s budgeted amount of $1200). Use your weekly worship giving envelope mailed with check to CLC and indicate “FBNWI/PN” or contribute through Subsplash on the CLC website https://clcvalpo.org via the “Give” button and choose Monthly Social Ministry Emphasis. Thank you to members for supporting monthly social ministry emphases.
LWR School Kits Even though it is just July, it's almost that time of year again – time to collect school supplies for Lutheran
World Relief. School Kits for Lutheran World Relief are
an important lifeline for learners all around the world. As you purchase school supplies for your children, think about choosing supplies for others. There is a basket in the Gathering Space for donations, or you can purchase from an Amazon wish list and choose to have the items delivered directly to the church. There are a variety of suggestions on the list,
with some items in bulk. The items on the wish list are only suggestions; you may be able to find cheaper items as the inventory changes. We will be collecting items through mid-October. The link to the Amazon wish list can be found by searching Amazon lists for "CLC School Kit," or by clicking the link below. Amazon CLC School Kit wish list Our goal this year is to collect enough supplies for 100 kits, each kit containing the following: FOUR – 70-sheet notebooks of wide- or college-ruled paper, approximately 8” x
10 ½” (LWR cannot use loose-leaf paper). Usually, Walmart has these for 35 cents each, so it is probably best to wait until their stock is out in the store. ONE – 30-centimeter ruler, or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other (these are 2 for $1 at Dollar General). ONE – pair of blunt scissors (safety scissors with
embedded steel blades work well). FIVE – black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink). ONE – box of 16 or 24 crayons. ONE – 2.5" eraser. FIVE – unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers. We already have enough pencil sharpeners this year. If you find any great deals on supplies, please let me know at kathyjopage@gmail.com and I will share with
others. Gathering supplies with your children as you prepare for returning to school is a great way
to remind yourself and them that we need to continue to love our neighbors, near and far. It helps us all remember that God’s love is everywhere! Thank you for your support!
