Unfailing Light
Thursday Evening Worship
7:00 p.m. Near the Memorial Garden
In case of inclement weather, Thursday evening worship will move into the sanctuary for an abbreviated service, with our usual practices of distancing and masks.
Updates to our COVID
planning
As Porter County’s infection rate, number of cases, and advisory level continue to look promising we are adjusting our COVID response
planning, especially for worship. Already we are no longer requiring pre-registration, have returned to sharing the Peace and using our offering plates, and receiving Communion at the altar rail.
Starting this week, those who are fully vaccinated may attend worship without masks.
Those who are not yet vaccinated are expected to wear masks while in the building, for their own and others’ protection. (Of course, vaccinated folks are welcome to wear masks for protection or solidarity with those who cannot yet be vaccinated.)
We are asking everyone to bring masks to wear during our sending
hymn. Since guidance continues to show that singing together is a concern, by no longer wearing masks together we are making it more difficult to sing more often. Asking for masks at the sending hymn seems a reasonable trade-off we may revisit in the future. Please bring a mask so we can at least have this bit of group singing in our
worship!
As always, we hold our planning lightly: developments in infection rates and relevant guidance will mean we revisit our protocols and
will update as we go along.
CLC Social Ministry and Mission
August 2021
|
Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) https://www.lirs.org has a vision that all migrants and refugees are protected, embraced and empowered in a world of just and welcoming communities. LIRS mission is witness to God’s love for all people, standing with and advocating for migrants and refugees, transforming communities through ministries of service and justice. For 80 years, LIRS has been a
champion for migrants and refugees from around the globe. A legacy of courageous and compassionate service has made a difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of people who have sought safety and hope in America’s communities. LIRS history reflects American Lutherans’ deep immigrant roots and passionate commitment to welcoming newcomers, especially those who are most in need. In partnership with community-based legal and social service providers nationwide, LIRS has helped over 500,000
migrants and refugees rebuild their lives in America.
Lutheran Braille Workers (LBW) https://www.lbwinc.org has existed since 1943 to show the love of God to people with visual disabilities and to bring them into a growing relationship with God. LBW does this by engaging some 5,000 volunteers in over 150 Work Centers throughout the United States. Volunteers joyfully produce approximately 250,000 volumes a year of Braille and specialized Large Print Bibles and Christian literature. CLC is one of these Work Centers and is involved in making Braille books of the Bible for the blind. COVID-19 has limited what volunteers can do so far in 2020 but the Braille workers resumed meeting on
May 18th and have made 206 books thus far. During the pandemic the headquarters in Yucaipa, CA utilized the down time to reorganize the warehouse, get the new plate machine installed and running, and made audio books. While centers are currently challenged by mail restrictions to some countries, we have increased our monthly output. The prayers and financial support of Christ Lutheran are vital in continuing this ministry. New volunteers are always welcome and no experience is needed. Monthly
emphases gifts will go towards national LBW activities and to help with supplies for CLC’s Work Center.
Help achieve our goal of $2500 in August (over and above giving combined with CLC’s budgeted amount). By achieving our goal CLC will help LIRS and LBW continue mutual
support and service activities that are crucial to effective ministry. Use your weekly worship giving mailed in check to CLC and indicate “LIRS/LBM” or contribute through PushPay on the CLC website https://clcvalpo.org via the “Give” button and choose Monthly Social Ministry Emphasis. Thank you to members for supporting monthly social ministry emphases.

Men Shelter
Update
The men in the New Creations program have overnight housing through Housing Opportunities for the next year.
For food needs we have been providing sack lunches so that’s our greatest need right now. We need things like water bottles, lunch meat, sub rolls (they hold up better than bread), small chip bags, pudding cups, fruit, Gatorade, and snack cakes.
The need for dinners, breakfast and pantry items are ongoing. Many things like canned foods, milk, bread, plastic wrap will be needed for the men.

SCHOOL KITS
It's that time of year again - time to go back to school and to collect school supplies for Lutheran World Relief.
School Kits for Lutheran World Relief are an important lifeline for learners all around the world. As many areas return to normal this year after a long pandemic school year, our continued efforts to bring relief to others are very important.
As you purchase school supplies for your children, think about choosing supplies for others. There will be a box in the Gathering Space for donations, or you can purchase from an Amazon wish list and choose to have the items delivered directly to the church. There are a variety of suggestions on the list, with some items in bulk. We will be
collecting items through mid-October. The link to the Amazon wish list can be found by searching Amazon lists for "CLC School Kit," or by clicking the link below.
Amazon CLC School Kit wish list
Each school kits needs:
FOUR 70-sheet notebooks of wide- or college-ruled paper, approximately 8” x 10 ½” (LWR cannot use loose-leaf paper)
ONE 30-centimeter ruler, or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other
ONE pencil sharpener
ONE pair of blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades work well)
FIVE unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers
FIVE black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink)
ONE box of 16 or 24 crayons
ONE 2 ½” eraser
Gathering supplies with your children as you prepare for returning to school is a great way to remind yourself and them that we need to continue to love our neighbors, near and far. It helps us all remember that God’s love is everywhere! Thank you for your support!
Sandy & Dave Keammerer are always collecting the following items for Lutheran World Relief (LWR). Please check out garage and estate sales and drop off at the church.
